60%, TKL or Full-Size? How to Pick a Keyboard Size You Won't Regret


For most people, TKL is the answer. It drops the numpad — about 9 cm of width — without giving up a single key you use daily. A 60% only pays off if you play shooters at very low sensitivity and accept living on layers. Full-size still makes sense if you work with numbers or play simulators.

The six layouts at a glance

The percentages describe approximate width relative to a full-size board. Treat the measurements as reference points: any given model varies a centimetre or two depending on bezels.

The one thing that genuinely changes: width

No mystery here. Your mouse moves in whatever space is left to the right of your keyboard. The narrower the board, the more mouse lane you get on the same desk.

Going from full-size to TKL hands back about 9 centimetres: typical widths run around 17.5 inches for a full-size and 14 for a TKL, the same scale used in the Rtings keyboard size guide. That matters for two reasons:

  1. Low sensitivity. The lower your sensitivity, the more mousepad you need for a full turn. CS2 pros sit in the 30 to 55 cm per 360° range, and from roughly 40 cm up a wide swing runs off the pad and into your keyboard. Those nine centimetres are the difference between a clean turn and lifting the mouse halfway through it.
  2. Shoulder posture. With a full-size board your mouse sits further from your body’s centre line and your right arm works more abducted. You won’t feel it in an hour; you will over an eight-hour day. It’s the classic office-ergonomics argument, and it applies just as well to gaming.

Full-size to TKL is the big jump. TKL to 60% is another 7 cm, and there the payoff starts depending on your desk: if your mousepad already fits comfortably, you’re trading keys for space you won’t use.

What each step costs you

The numpad (full-size → TKL). If you don’t punch numbers into spreadsheets, you won’t miss it. One under-discussed catch: some games assume it’s there. GTA V’s default flight controls are Num 8, Num 5, Num 4 and Num 6 for pitch and roll — rebindable, but you have to do it — and in X4: Foundations the tutorial asks for Num + and Num - to zoom, with players reporting that remapping them doesn’t work properly. If you live in simulators, this isn’t nitpicking.

The navigation cluster (TKL → 75%). Insert, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down move to a cramped column or straight onto a layer. Programmers and anyone editing long documents feel this far more than gamers do.

The function row (75% → 65%). F1-F12 move to Fn + number row. Irrelevant for gaming — almost no game needs F5 mid-fight — but if you use F2 to rename, F5 to refresh, or the F keys in an IDE, every action becomes two presses.

The arrows (65% → 60%). This is the step people regret most. Arrow keys scrub a video, move a text cursor, navigate a game menu. On a 60% they live under Fn + WASD or Fn + IJKL, and Wooting’s own guide says it plainly: expect an adjustment period of two to four weeks for most people.

Honest advice: the 65% is the 60% most people should actually buy. One extra centimetre of width buys back dedicated arrows. No other step on that table gives you back so much for so little.

The layouts nobody puts in the comparison

Two formats sit in the gaps between the catalogue sizes:

  • 96% / 1800: keeps the numpad, the arrows and the function row, but strips out the gaps between blocks. Saves roughly 4-5 cm over a full-size. The fine print: several models trim one or two navigation keys (Insert is the usual casualty). Still, if you genuinely need a numpad and want mouse room, this is the layout you’re looking for, and almost nobody mentions it.
  • Compact 80%: popularised by the Wooting 80HE. Keeps the function row and arrows but squeezes the navigation cluster into a 2×3 block — 83 keys in ANSI, 84 in ISO — in a smaller footprint than a classic TKL. Per TechPowerUp’s review, the cost of that compression is 6 editing keys instead of 9.

What size does not do for you

Marketing pushes hard in the opposite direction, so it’s worth being blunt.

A smaller keyboard does not make you aim better. It moves your mouse lane, that’s all. If you play at high sensitivity and your mousepad already has room to spare, going from TKL to 60% will not raise your rank. Not a bit.

Layout has nothing to do with latency or rapid trigger. Hall effect switches, adjustable actuation and 8 kHz polling exist in 60%, TKL and full-size alike. A cheap “60% gaming” board with membrane switches is a worse keyboard than a decent TKL. The technology lives in the switch, not in the width.

“Pro layout” is not a spec. Compact formats do dominate the competitive scene — in ProSettings’ August 2026 count, the most-used board among 686 Valorant pros is a 60% (the Wooting 60HE+, around 24%), and an 80% leads in CS2 — but those players run absurdly low sensitivities and don’t open a spreadsheet between matches. Copying the layout without copying the context is why so many people resell their 60% three months later.

Don’t buy a small layout to save money. A good 60% costs the same as or more than an ordinary TKL: you’re paying for the PCB and the switches, not for the plastic you’re not getting.

Quick decision list

  • Competitive FPS at low sensitivity (40 cm or more per 360°) → 60% or 65%. Start with 65%.
  • You play everything and the PC is also your work machine → TKL. It’s the default answer for a reason.
  • Narrow desk (under 100 cm) or a large monitor setup → 65% or 75%.
  • You work with numbers, accounting or data entry → 96%/1800 before full-size.
  • You play simulators, MMOs with heavy binds or strategy → full-size or 96%. You need the keys.
  • It’s your first compact keyboard → don’t go below 65%. Jumping straight to 60% is the most repeated mistake.
  • You move desks often or travel → 60% or 65%, purely for backpack size.
