How to Stretch Your Handheld's Battery: the Settings That Actually Work


Battery life is the biggest gap between a handheld’s spec sheet and using one. In a demanding game with nothing tuned, expect an hour and a half to three hours — not the eight or twelve you’ll see advertised, which are measured with light games or at idle.

At 60Hz, each frame lasts about 16.7 ms. If your game only reaches 40 FPS on a 60Hz screen, the frames don’t slot in evenly against the panel’s refresh: some last one cycle and some last two, and that reads as stutter even when the average is steady.

If you also drop the display’s refresh to 40Hz, each frame lasts exactly 25 ms and always lands where it should. The result feels noticeably smoother than the same 40 FPS on a 60Hz panel, and draws considerably less than running at 60.

3. Lower the TDP

TDP is the wattage ceiling you allow the chip, and every one of these devices lets you adjust it.

Here’s the part people don’t expect: plenty of games don’t come close to needing the maximum. Indies, 2D games, emulation and a good share of the back catalogue run exactly the same at half the wattage — and there your runtime doubles.

How to find your number without guessing:

  1. Load the game you want to play and lower the TDP until you see FPS drop below your cap.
  2. Step it back up one notch.
  3. Save that profile per game if your system allows it — SteamOS and the manufacturer utilities on Windows both do.
