What an ultrawide asks of your GPU

This is the format’s hidden cost, and it’s clearer in pixels than in inches. An ultrawide isn’t “1440p but a bit wider”: it’s considerably more work for the card.

Translated: a 3440×1440 at 175Hz asks for roughly what a 1440p at 240Hz does, and the 49” at 5120×1440 plays in 4K’s league. If your card was already stretched at 1440p, an ultrawide won’t go easier on it for being wider.

Measure your desk before you pay

It’s the silliest return in this category, because a tape measure prevents it.

Width. A 34” ultrawide takes about 80 cm of desk; a 39”, about 91 cm; and the 49” super-ultrawide runs to almost 120 cm — wider than many desks are in total. Add the stand, which on ultrawides tends to be broad.

Depth, which matters just as much. A wraparound screen placed too close stops being immersive and starts making you turn your head. For a 34” you want to be able to sit about 80 cm back; if your desk is 60 cm deep, you’ll end up right on top of it.

And weight, if you’re thinking about an arm. A 34” OLED ultrawide weighs considerably more than a normal 27”, and plenty of cheap VESA arms are rated for monitors half that weight. Check the arm’s maximum before you buy it, not after.
