If you’re shopping for a laptop for engineering, architecture, or graphic design, watch out for a common mistake: buying a gaming laptop and assuming it works the same way. It shares hardware (an NVIDIA GPU, solid RAM), but what actually matters is different — AutoCAD and Revit lean mostly on CPU clock speed and certified drivers rather than FPS, and Photoshop or Premiere care more about the display and RAM than refresh rate. What each program actually uses
Before looking at models, it’s worth clearing up a misunderstanding that makes people spend badly: most engineering and architecture software doesn’t take advantage of many cores.

The practical consequence: for CAD, an 8-core processor with a high clock beats a slower 16-core one — the exact opposite of what intuition suggests. Cores and GPU only start paying off once you render or edit video.

What you can upgrade later (and what you can’t)

RAM. On thin laptops and many creator models, memory is soldered to the board: what you buy is what you’ll always have. Thicker gaming or workstation machines usually have free SO-DIMM slots.
