The motherboard is the most misunderstood component of any build: it gives you zero FPS, but it decides what you can connect today and what you can upgrade to tomorrow. The secret brands won’t tell you: for pure gaming, a $110 board and a $500 board perform exactly the same — you pay for connectivity and component quality, not speed. Here’s the straight guide with picks from Tom’s Hardware and PC Gamer, focused on AMD’s AM5 platform.

The 50% increase changes when to buy

We’re starting here because it affects everything else.

ASUS, GIGABYTE and MSI are preparing increases of at least 50% on consumer boards during Q3, according to supply-chain sources. The main driver is the PCB, up around 50% in 2026, plus copper, capacitors and power components. There’s a second-order effect too: with DIY demand falling, there are fewer boards to spread fixed costs across.

The status of that figure matters: it’s a report, not an announcement. None of the three brands has confirmed it publicly. We treat it as likely, not settled.

That flips the usual advice. If you’re building in the next few months, buy the board before the GPU — it’s the component with the largest flagged increase and the one that benefits least from waiting. And there’s a specific trap: when budgets get tight, almost everyone trims here first. With a 50% rise coming, that logic gets expensive, because the cheap board in a high-end range isn’t the same thing as a budget board.

First: decode the chipsets in 30 seconds

  • B650 — the solid base: PCIe 5.0 for the GPU on many models, enough for any budget or mid-range build.
  • B850 — the 2026 sweet spot: WiFi 7, more fast M.2 slots, better VRMs. Worth the ~$30-50 premium over B650.
  • X870/X870E — the top: guaranteed USB4 (40 Gbps) and more PCIe 5.0 lanes. For gaming it doesn’t change your frame rates — only for those who need that connectivity.

One rule that saves money and almost nobody applies: the chipset sets the ceiling, not the floor. A good B650 beats a bad B850 at the only thing that matters long-term, which is CPU power delivery. Before moving up a chipset, check you’re not paying for the label and losing the substance.

Reading a VRM without being an engineer

This is where it’s decided whether the board survives your next upgrade, and it’s what spec sheets hide best.

The VRM is the circuit that converts the PSU’s 12 V into the voltage the processor asks for. If it’s marginal it runs hot; if it runs hot, the CPU drops clocks to protect itself. The result isn’t a failure, it’s a machine quietly performing below what you paid for.

Three things you can check without knowing electronics:

  1. Phase count — listed as “14+2+2” or similar. The first number is CPU phases. For a Ryzen 5 or 7, eight or more is plenty; for a Ryzen 9, look for twelve or more.
  2. Heatsinks over the VRMs — the metal blocks around the socket. If the board ships them large and in direct contact, the manufacturer took it seriously.
  3. Reviews with thermal imaging — Tom’s Hardware and Hardware Unboxed measure VRM temperatures under load. If a board shows above 90 °C, rule it out for a powerful CPU.

If you only read one line of this guide: this is the board we’d buy for almost any build between $1,000 and $2,500. Below it you feel the cuts; above it you’re paying for connectivity you probably won’t use.

That build is AM4 (Ryzen 5 5600) and this guide covers AM5 — two different bets. That said, be honest about your case: if you can’t name a device you own that uses USB4, this tier isn’t for you. Moving from B850 to X870 doesn’t add a single frame.

Checklist before buying any board

  1. Right socket: AM5 for Ryzen 7000/9000; always check the manufacturer’s CPU support list.
  2. 4 RAM slots beat 2: expand without replacing. With DDR5 this expensive, that matters more than it used to.
  3. Form factor vs case: an ATX board won’t fit a micro-ATX case — see our cases article.
  4. Updated BIOS if the CPU is recent: some boards need an update to boot the newest Ryzen chips. Look for “BIOS Flashback” on the spec sheet — it lets you update with no CPU installed and saves you a serious headache.
