Last week I told you the RX 9070 XT was the clear buy because AMD had raised prices 10% while Nvidia raised 20-30%. Seven days later, AMD has notified its board partners of another increase and that advantage is closing. So this week starts with the uncomfortable part — correcting my own recommendation — and then a warning: the next component to get expensive isn’t the GPU. It’s the motherboard.

AMD raises Radeon 10% in August, closing the gap with Nvidia

According to supply-chain reporting (Board Channels, via VideoCardz), AMD notified its board partners on July 31 — Sapphire, ASUS, XFX, Vastarmor — of an increase of at least 10% on the GPU-and-GDDR6 kit, effective in August. The interesting part of the report is the timing: AMD had the increase finalised back in June and deliberately held it until Nvidia moved first. Reporting points to 10-15% cumulative for the second half of the year, so this wouldn’t be the last one (VideoCardz).

What it means for your next purchase: I have to correct what I wrote last week. I said the $190-200 gap between the RX 9070 XT and the RTX 5070 Ti made AMD the clear buy for rasterised gaming. That’s still true today, but it now has an expiry date — and it’s worth understanding why that advantage was never quite what it looked like: AMD wasn’t raising less out of generosity, it was waiting. It has stopped waiting.

Two details that change the practical decision:

  1. The increase hits board partners, not shelves. Partners work through inventory bought at the old price first, so cards on shelves today may hold their prices for several weeks. That’s not relief — it’s a window. If the 9070 XT was your card, the best price you’ll see is inside those weeks, not after them.
  2. It lands hardest on high-VRAM models. A 16GB kit buys far more GDDR6 than an 8GB one, so the same percentage hurts more in dollars further up the stack. Worse: partners are prioritising production of 8GB models exactly when games are asking for the opposite (VideoCardz).

That second point is the one that bothers me, because it pushes budget buyers toward 8GB cards that will age badly. If that’s you, read how much VRAM you need in 2026 before accepting the cheap model: paying a bit more for 12 or 16GB is still the right call, even if it takes more convincing this month.

My revised recommendation, plainly: the RX 9070 XT still wins for pure rasterisation at 1440p, but the margin is narrowing and the “AMD raises less” argument no longer exists. Motherboards are heading for a 50% increase in Q3

ASUS, GIGABYTE and MSI are preparing increases of at least 50% on consumer motherboards during Q3, according to supply-chain sources. The main driver is the PCB itself, up roughly 50% across 2026, plus copper, SMD capacitors, power components and supporting controllers. There’s a second-order effect too: with DIY demand sliding, there are fewer boards to spread fixed costs across. A $200 board would push past $300 (TechPowerUp, VideoCardz).

What it means for your next purchase: this is the most important story of the week to me, and it’ll go unnoticed because the motherboard is the boring component. We’ve spent a year talking about GPUs and RAM. Meanwhile, the part nobody discusses is lining up the largest percentage increase of all.

There’s a specific trap in how we buy boards, too. When budgets tighten, almost everyone cuts here first: “it’s just the motherboard, I’ll take the cheapest.” With 50% on top, that logic gets dangerous — because the cheapest board in a good range is not the same thing as a low-end board, and the VRM, connectors and M.2 slots are exactly what limits your next upgrade.

What I’d do:

  • If your build is happening in the next two or three months, buy the board now, even before the GPU. It has the largest announced increase and it’s the component that benefits least from waiting.
  • If you’re waiting anyway, adjust the budget today. Add $60-100 to the motherboard line in your spreadsheet and make every other decision against that number.

Price hikes are reaching retail — and arriving unevenly by region

GIGABYTE is raising its GeForce and Radeon prices 20% to 40% in Japan from August 1, per a notice from distributor CFD Sales, which also warns that some orders placed earlier may not be fulfilled at the agreed price and would be cancelled case by case. In South Korea, RTX 5060 Ti listings have appeared 49% higher, and China is seeing channel increases near 20% at ASUS and GIGABYTE (Tom’s Hardware, TechPowerUp).

What it means for your next purchase: until now the increases were announcements to manufacturers. This is shelf price, and it teaches two things that apply everywhere even though the figures are from Asia.

First: an increase at the manufacturer takes weeks to reach your store, and it arrives unevenly. Japan goes first because its channel reprices quickly; Europe and the Americas take the hit later, once old inventory clears. Translated: you are currently inside the lag, and that lag is your buying window. This isn’t manufactured urgency — it’s how the channel works.

Second, and more practical: an order isn’t a price until it’s charged and shipped. A Japanese distributor cancelling already-accepted orders should kill the “I’ll reserve it and pay later” instinct. If you find a good price, close the whole purchase — and check the same-day price at the specific retailer, because aggregators lag (Tom’s Hardware price tracking).

The Radeon RX 9050 arrives at $279 — with fine print

AMD launched the 8GB Radeon RX 9050 at $279 in Asia-Pacific, Japan and Latin America, with no date for North America or Europe. It’s RDNA 4: 16 compute units, 1,024 stream processors, 18 Gbps GDDR6 on a 128-bit bus and 92W board power, aimed at 1080p esports and medium-settings AAA. There’s also a 4GB variant with the bus cut to 64 bits, sold only inside prebuilt systems, never as a standalone card (VideoCardz, PC Gamer).

What it means for your next purchase: an unusual inversion — Latin America is in the first wave and the US and Europe are not. With the entry tier thinning out from production cuts, a new $279 card in those regions fills a gap that had been empty.

Now the fine print, which matters a lot here:

  • The 92W figure is the card’s best feature. It drops into recycled office machines and modest power supplies without drama. For a first PC, that’s worth more than 10% more frames.
  • 8GB in 2026 is the floor, not a comfortable place to be. At 1080p on medium it does the job. If your plan is 1440p or high textures, this isn’t your card and won’t become one in two years.
  • The 4GB variant is the trap. Same name, prebuilt-only, half the memory bus. If you buy a prebuilt advertising a “Radeon RX 9050”, get written confirmation that it’s the 8GB card. This is exactly the kind of naming confusion that ends in a bad purchase.

DDR5 stays brutal: 32GB over $400 and 2027 already sold out

A 32GB DDR5 kit now costs over $400, against roughly $100 in September 2025 — about four times higher. Consumer DRAM contract prices rose as much as 89% in a single quarter, and the worst detail is that 2027 production slots are already sold to AI customers. Intel has pointed to 2028 before any relief (Tom’s Hardware, RAM price tracking).

What it means for your next purchase: I want to be blunt, because I see a lot of people waiting: there is no well-founded reason to believe RAM gets cheaper within your buying horizon. If 2027 capacity is already committed, waiting isn’t a strategy — it’s deferring the same bill while getting less PC in the meantime.

How that turns into decisions:

  1. 32GB stops being the default recommendation. For years the easy advice was “put 32 in and forget it”. At these prices, a well-chosen 16GB plus an upgrade path is more sensible for most gamers — unless you edit video or run virtual machines.
  2. Leave slots free. Buying 2×8 on a four-slot board lets you expand later without throwing away what you bought. That matters more this year than kit aesthetics.
  3. DDR4 makes sense again if you already own the platform. On AM4 or LGA 1200, adding to the memory you already run is by far the best cost-to-benefit move available.
  4. Don’t pay for RGB or extreme frequencies. The in-game difference between a solid kit and a “premium” one is small; the price difference, this year, is not.
