
How to Assemble a Gaming PC Step by Step: From CPU to First Boot
You’ve picked your parts and they’re sitting on the table — now comes the moment that scares people most and should scare them least: the physical assembly. The truth is that building a gaming PC is essentially fitting seven parts together in the right order: it takes 1 to 2 hours your first time and all you need is a screwdriver. Before you start: what to have on hand
- A #2 Phillips screwdriver — the only essential tool.
- A firm, clean, well-lit table. Avoid carpet: it generates static electricity that can damage components.
- Discharge your body’s static by touching an unpainted metal surface before handling each part (or use an anti-static wrist strap if you have one).
- The motherboard and case manuals. You’ll need them mostly for cabling — keep them open.
General ordering tip: install the CPU, RAM and M.2 SSD onto the motherboard outside the case (it’s far easier), and only then mount the board inside.
The 10 steps to build your PC
Step 1 — Prep your workspace
Unpack the components and leave them on their anti-static bags. Work calmly: rushing is the number-one cause of poorly seated parts and over-tightened screws.
Step 2 — Install the CPU on the motherboard
- Lift the socket’s retention lever.
- Find the gold triangle on one corner of the processor and align it with the matching mark on the socket.
- Lower the CPU straight down, no force: if it’s oriented correctly, it seats itself under its own weight.
- Close the lever to secure it.
Never force the processor. If it doesn’t drop in easily, it’s misaligned or incompatible with that socket. Then apply a pea-sized amount of thermal paste onto the CPU (if your cooler doesn’t come with it pre-applied) and install the cooler. Connect its fan to the board’s CPU_FAN header.
And peel the plastic off the cooler’s base. It sounds obvious written down, but it’s one of the most frequent first-build mistakes: many coolers ship with a clear protective film over the contact plate, and leaving it on sends the processor’s temperature through the roof from the first minute. If the paste is pre-applied, don’t touch it — just check there’s no film on top of it.
Two orientation details, depending on what you bought:
- Air cooler: mount it so its fan pushes air toward the rear of the case, in the same direction as the exhaust fan. The airflow criteria are in the case guide.
- Liquid cooling (AIO): the pump must never be the highest point in the loop, or it’ll end up running with air inside and getting noisy. Radiator on top with the tubes pointing down, or at the front with the tubes at the bottom. We explain it in the cooling guide.
Step 3 — Install the RAM
Open the slot latches, align the module’s notch with the slot’s, and press firmly until you hear the click on both ends. With two modules, check the manual to enable dual channel: it’s almost always slots 2 and 4 counting from the CPU (A2/B2). Dual channel gives 10-15% more gaming performance, especially with integrated graphics.
Step 4 — Install the M.2 SSD
Locate the M.2 slot (usually under an aluminum cover). Insert the SSD at about a 30° angle, push it gently down and secure it with its screw or retention clip. Put the cover back if it had one.
If your board has several M.2 slots, use the one wired directly to the CPU — the manual says which, and it’s usually the one closest to the processor. The others go through the chipset and are slightly slower, and on some boards they share lanes with SATA ports.
Here, before anything goes into the case, stop for a moment. With the CPU, cooler and RAM already fitted, this is the best time to check the machine boots — we explain it further down, because it’s what separates a ten-minute fault from an entire afternoon disassembling.
Step 5 — Mount the motherboard in the case
Check that the case has its standoffs in the right positions for your board format (ATX, Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX) and fit the rear I/O shield if your board ships it separately. Align the rear ports with the shield and the holes with the standoffs, and screw it in without over-tightening so you don’t damage the PCB.
Count the standoffs and remove any spares. There should be exactly one per mounting hole on your board, not one more. A metal standoff sitting under the PCB where there’s no hole shorts the board out, and the symptom is a machine that shows no sign of life — a fault that’s very hard to find afterwards because the board is covered.
And if your I/O shield is the old loose-metal kind: fit it before the board. It’s impossible to slot in afterwards without taking everything out, and it’s one of the steps people most often redo.
Step 6 — Install the power supply
The PSU usually goes at the bottom. Orient its fan toward the case vent (downward if there’s a base vent, upward if not) and secure it with its four screws.
Step 7 — Install the GPU
Remove the rear brackets matching the primary PCIe slot (the longest one, closest to the CPU). Insert the card straight and firm until you hear the latch click, and screw its bracket to the chassis.
Step 8 — Connect the cables
With the board manual on hand, connect:
- 24-pin ATX → the board’s main power.
- 8-pin EPS → CPU power (top corner of the board).
- 6+2-pin PCIe → GPU power (if the card needs it).
- Front-panel cables → power, reset and LEDs (follow the manual’s diagram: it’s the easiest one to get wrong).
- SATA → for extra drives or SATA SSDs.
- Case fans → SYS_FAN / CHA_FAN headers.
On the front panel, which is where most people get stuck: it’s four or five tiny two-pin connectors, and your board manual’s diagram is the only valid reference — it changes between models. The LEDs have polarity (the coloured wire is positive); the power and reset buttons don’t, so if the button doesn’t respond it isn’t because you fitted it backwards. Many boards include a plastic adapter where you assemble all the connectors outside and then plug it in as one piece: if yours has it, use it.
And the GPU connector, carefully. If your card uses the single high-power connector (12V-2×6), push it in until it clicks and don’t bend the cable right at the exit — leave three centimetres straight before curving it. The reason why is in the power supply guide.
Tidy the cables with zip ties so they don’t block airflow.
Step 9 — First boot and BIOS
Connect the monitor to the GPU, not the motherboard’s video ports. Power on. If all is well, you’ll see the manufacturer logo or the BIOS. Enter the BIOS (usually Del or F2 at startup) and confirm that:
- The CPU and RAM are detected correctly.
- The RAM runs at its real speed: enable the XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD) profile if available.
- The SSD appears in the device list.
Step 10 — Install Windows
With an 8 GB or larger USB drive, create a Windows 11 installer using Microsoft’s official tool. Boot from the USB (change the boot order in the BIOS) and follow the wizard.
The most common blocker here isn’t an assembly fault: Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, and on a brand-new board they’re sometimes disabled. If the installer tells you the machine doesn’t meet the requirements, go back to the BIOS and enable them — TPM shows up as fTPM on AMD boards and PTT on Intel. You don’t need to buy anything.
And the driver order once you’re done, which also matters:
- Motherboard chipset first, from your specific model’s page on the maker’s site. It’s what teaches Windows to manage the processor properly.
- GPU next, from NVIDIA or AMD. Don’t use the disc that came in the box: it’ll be out of date.
- The rest (network, audio) only if Windows hasn’t sorted them itself, which it usually has.
Of the extra software boards offer, you need almost none of it. Install the minimum and add what you find missing later.
The test that saves you taking it all apart
This is the technique that separates a calm first build from an afternoon of disassembly, and almost no guide mentions it.
Before the board goes into the case, with the CPU, cooler and RAM already installed, assemble the bare minimum on top of the motherboard’s own cardboard box (which is an insulator, unlike your desk if it’s metal):
- Set the board on its box.
- Connect the 24-pin ATX and the 8-pin EPS from the PSU.
- Fit the GPU in its slot and connect its power cable.
- Connect the monitor to the GPU.
- Switch the PSU on at its rear switch and bridge the two PWR_SW pins — the power button ones — by touching them for a second with the tip of your screwdriver. The manual tells you which they are.
If the BIOS comes up, everything essential works and you can build it into the case knowing that any problem that appears later is an assembly issue, not a faulty part.
If it doesn’t, you have very little to check and all of it in plain sight, instead of hunting for it with half the cables already zip-tied.
If it won’t boot, the board is telling you why
Before you start unplugging things at random, look at the board: most current models have four diagnostic LEDs along the edge, labelled CPU, DRAM, VGA and BOOT. They light in that order during startup, and whichever stays lit marks where it stopped:

Cheaper boards sometimes don’t have those LEDs, but they do have a header for the diagnostic speaker some cases include: the beeps say the same thing.
And if there’s no sign of life at all — no fans, no lights — the order to check is: the PSU’s rear switch, the front-panel cable, the 24-pin ATX, the 8-pin EPS.
Assembly mistakes that ruin the first boot
- Plugging the monitor into the motherboard instead of the GPU. You’ll get a picture, but with integrated-graphics performance. With a dedicated GPU, the monitor always goes to the GPU.
- Forgetting the CPU’s 8-pin EPS cable. The PC looks “dead” or boot-loops. It’s the most commonly forgotten cable.
- Poorly seated RAM. If it didn’t click on both sides, the PC won’t boot (or won’t see all the memory). Reseat it firmly.
- Miswired front-panel cable. If the power button doesn’t respond, it’s almost always this: check the manual’s diagram.
- A spare standoff under the board. It shorts the board out and the machine shows no sign of life. Count them before you screw anything down.
- The cooler’s protective film left on. It boots, but the processor’s temperature spikes within seconds.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need thermal paste to build my PC? It depends on the cooler. Many bundled coolers (like AMD’s Wraith Stealth) come with paste pre-applied. If yours doesn’t, apply a pea-sized amount onto the CPU before mounting the cooler.
In what order do I install the parts? CPU → RAM → M.2 SSD onto the board (outside the case), then board into the case → PSU → GPU → cables. Leaving the CPU and RAM for last, with the board already screwed in, makes everything harder for no reason.
How long does the physical assembly take? Between 1 and 3 hours for someone with no prior experience. With this guide and the manuals on hand, most people finish in under 2 hours.
What do I do if the PC won’t turn on the first time? Check in this order: (1) front-panel cable (power switch), (2) 24-pin ATX, (3) CPU’s 8-pin EPS, (4) RAM seated properly. It’s almost always one of those four.
Is it hard to build a PC if I’ve never done it? No. Assembly is the easy part of the process; the hard part is choosing compatible, balanced components, which we cover in the components guide.
Can I test that it works before building it all into the case? Yes, and you should. With the board on its own cardboard box, the CPU, cooler, RAM and GPU fitted and the PSU connected, bridge the PWR_SW pins with a screwdriver. If you reach the BIOS, the essentials work.
My PC won’t boot and I don’t know where to start. Look at the board’s diagnostic LEDs (CPU, DRAM, VGA, BOOT): whichever stays lit tells you where startup stopped. It’s far quicker than unplugging parts one by one.
The Windows 11 installer says my PC doesn’t meet the requirements — what’s missing? Almost always TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot disabled in the BIOS. Enable them there: fTPM on AMD boards, PTT on Intel. You don’t need to buy anything.
