
What Is Rapid Trigger, How It Works, and When It Does Nothing
Rapid trigger is a feature of analog-switch keyboards (magnetic or optical) that registers a key as released the moment it starts travelling back up, instead of waiting for a fixed reset point. It makes repeated inputs faster in competitive shooters. Outside that — typing, single-player games, strategy — it does nothing.
First: what a normal switch does
A mechanical switch has two depths that matter and almost nobody checks:
- Actuation point: the depth at which the key registers as pressed. On a Cherry MX Red that’s 2 mm out of 4 mm of total travel.
- Reset point: the depth at which the key counts as released again. It’s fixed by design, sits very close to actuation, and can’t be moved.
The thing that breaks this is what humans actually do while gaming: we don’t stop at 2 mm, we bottom the key out. So for the keyboard to register a release, your finger has to bring the key back up from 4 mm past the reset point — roughly 2 mm of physical travel. Until that happens, the game still thinks you’re holding the key.
Two millimetres sound like nothing. In a duel where you alternate A and D several times a second, those two millimetres per release are the real ceiling on your speed.
What rapid trigger changes
With rapid trigger on, the reset point stops being fixed. The keyboard tracks the key’s position continuously and applies a different rule: if the key travels up by X millimetres, it counts as released; if it travels back down by X millimetres, it counts as pressed again. That X is the sensitivity you set — usually between 0.1 and 1 mm, going as low as 0.01 mm on boards with finer sensors.
In other words, depth stops mattering. With your finger down at 3.5 mm, moving up 0.3 mm releases the key right there. You never have to bring it back to the surface.
That requires a switch that knows where the key is at every instant, not just whether it’s pressed. Which is why rapid trigger only exists on analog switches: Hall effect magnetics (a magnet on the stem and a sensor reading the field, as Tom’s Hardware explains), the newer TMR sensors — finer resolution, lower power draw, and by 2026 shipping in boards from Akko, Gamakay and CHERRY XTRFY — and some analog optical switches.
A classic mechanical switch only has two states: contact or no contact. It can’t do real rapid trigger, whatever the box says. If you see a membrane keyboard advertising it, it’s calling something else by that name.
Why it only shows up when counter-strafing
Rapid trigger does not reduce your keyboard’s latency. Worth repeating, because the marketing implies the opposite. The signal travels just as fast; what gets shorter is the time your finger spends moving before that signal goes out.
And that time is only a bottleneck in one specific motion: the counter-strafe. In CS2 and Valorant, shooting accurately means stopping dead, and you stop by pressing the key opposite the one you were holding. A → D → A → D, dozens of times per round. Every one of those transitions contains a release, and the release is where rapid trigger saves time.
Anywhere else the gain is zero. Hitting reload faster gives you nothing. Walking in an RPG doesn’t improve. Neither does typing — when you type you already release keys fully.

Rapid trigger and Snap Tap are not the same (and one is banned)
Because of this confusion a lot of people think rapid trigger is banned. It isn’t.
- Rapid trigger: you press, you release. The keyboard just detects the release sooner. It’s a finer reading of a motion your finger made.
- Snap Tap / SOCD / null bind: the keyboard decides for you. Hold A, press D, and the firmware cancels A automatically without you releasing it. There the keyboard performs an action your hand never did.
Valve drew the line exactly there. On 19 August 2024 it banned input automation in Counter-Strike 2 — PC Gamer covered it — and the anti-cheat kicks anyone using SOCD, Snap Tap or null binds from matches on official servers. Still in force as of September 2026, and leagues playing under Valve’s ruleset keep it. Rapid trigger and adjustable actuation were left out of the ban.
In Valorant, Riot hasn’t published an equivalent ban on hardware SOCD. It’s a grey area that can change without warning. If you compete, the practical rule is simple: rapid trigger on, Snap Tap off.
When it isn’t worth it
Saying this plainly because almost nobody does:
- If you don’t play competitive shooters on keyboard, don’t buy a magnetic board for rapid trigger. You’re paying for a feature you won’t use.
- If you play shooters casually, the difference is real but sits below the noise of your own consistency. You’ll lose the same duels.
- If money is tight, the order is different: a higher-refresh monitor, a mouse that fits your hand, a mousepad with room. All three matter more than this.
- If you type for hours, a badly configured magnetic board will annoy you. You can turn rapid trigger off for typing, but then you overpaid to use it as a normal keyboard.
And one money-saving data point: Rtings titled its research on the topic A Rapid Trigger Keyboard Could Help You Win… But Any Of Them Will Do. The conclusion is that having the feature is what matters, not which model brings it. In 2026 there are decent magnetic boards from roughly $60-90 depending on the market (Akko, MonsGeek, Aula) that do the same thing as the $200 ones as far as rapid trigger goes. What you pay extra for on a Wooting 80HE — the highest-scoring gaming keyboard Rtings has tested — is build, software and sound, not reset speed.

How to set it up without double inputs
The rookie mistake is putting everything at minimum on day one. At 0.1 mm sensitivity, a finger tremor or the resting weight of your hand registers as a press. You get repeated letters while typing and phantom movement while playing, and people blame the keyboard.
A sane starting point:
- Actuation point: 1.2-1.5 mm on WASD. Don’t drop to 0.2 mm out of the gate.
- Rapid trigger sensitivity: 0.3 mm up and 0.3 mm down.
- On movement keys only, not the whole board. Ability, reload and comms keys don’t need it, and that’s exactly where it gets in the way.
- A separate typing profile, rapid trigger off and actuation at 1.8-2 mm.
- Lower sensitivity in 0.05 steps only if it genuinely feels short. The moment double inputs start, step back up and stay there.
If your keyboard has Snap Tap or SOCD in software, leave it off by default and enable it only in games where you know it’s allowed.

Is rapid trigger banned in CS2? No. What Valve banned in August 2024 is input automation: Snap Tap, SOCD and null binds. Rapid trigger and adjustable actuation remain allowed because you physically make both the press and the release.
Do I need a magnetic keyboard for rapid trigger? You need an analog switch that measures key position continuously. That almost always means magnetic (Hall effect or TMR), though some analog optical switches do it too. A normal mechanical or membrane switch can’t.

Can I type with rapid trigger on? You can, but it’s uncomfortable when set too sensitive — repeated letters show up. The practical fix is a typing profile with rapid trigger off, and switching between profiles.
